In the future, you may not have to ever learn a second language. Instead, you may be able to just walk up to foreigners and wave your smartphone in their face. Why? Google is working hard to develop real-time translation technology for Google Translate, and it’s a technology that could very well change the world. Real-time translation has always been in the future for Google Translate – at least, that’s what people wanted to think. But finally, we have official confirmation that it’s actually in development. According to the UK Times, which calls the potential technology ‘Babel’, Google “is in the process of building prototypes” that would effectively allow anyone to speak fluently in a foreign language. Furthermore, “Android vice president Hugo Barra is enthusiastic about how close this technology could actually be.” Apparently, Google’s real-time translation has already been tested and is “near perfect” with certain language combinations, including English to Portuguese. Google also seems to be enthusiastic about testing the real-time features, with Barra saying that: “I’ve played with it every other week to see how much progress we’ve made.” If real-time translate technology is legit – and it seems like it’s less than a year away – then I’m extremely excited. I mean, just think of a device like Google Glass combined with real-time translation technology. Yes, that is the future we’re about to live in. And it’s all about to be powered by Android.
