Google Will Reportedly End Nexus Program, Switch Exclusively to “Google Play Edition”
2 min read
Nexus devices are the best way to enjoy the ‘pure’ version of Android. But just one year from now, Android devices might be a thing of the past.
According to Eldar Murtazin, Google is ending the Nexus line and replacing it with Google Play Edition devices. The name ‘Google Play Edition’, however, will be rebranded to something different.
Nexus line by Google is over in 2015 ;) Yes - this line will be replaced by Play Edition (current name, it will be rebranded)

Who is Eldar Murtazin, you might ask? He’s the editor in chief of Mobile-Review.com and generally a well-regarded member of the Android community. He’s leaked important information before, so maybe one of his Russian brethren is deeply embedded at Google HQ.
Why is Google making the switch?
Nexus devices are popular for a reason. They’re fast, clean, and come with the latest version of Android. Why would Google throw all that out the window? Well, I would expect Google is planning something even bigger for the Google Play Edition lineup. Google Play Edition devices have similar benefits but tend to receive updates less quickly than Nexus devices. If Google switches exclusively to Play Edition, then I would expect those devices to receive updates as soon as today’s Nexus devices. Of course, this news story could be entirely made up. But if Google wants to seriously compete with Apple, then solidifying all its ‘pure Android’ products under a single brand name could be a smart decision. Anyways, take this with a grain of salt.
