How Strong is Huawei P20’s Casing?

3 min read
The Huawei P20 and P20 Pro are one of the best Android phones today in terms of specifications and camera features. However, despite all its superb functionality, there seems to be a problem with the casing. The latest Huawei phone has undergone a series of paces to test its durability. This is all done by JerryRigEverything on Youtube. The test is subject to series of scratches, bends, and burns. JerryRigEveryhting has been doing this experiment for the past few years. He is also the one who proved that Gorilla Glass is indeed scratch proof and one of the hardest glass ever made. In this case, Huawei has undergone the same process as the previous tests. It needs to be done since Huawei did not use the Gorilla Glass coating in P20 and see if the alternative material is equally durable. Scratch and Burn The tempered showed remarkable results against scratch up to Level 5 on the Mohs hardness scale. However, it showed visible lines in Level 6 and deeper damage when the hardness scale was raised to level 7. The metallic side was traced with a cutter and peeled like a piece of apple. The glass protecting the rear camera lenses though is outstanding. It’s a good thing that Huawei is protecting their triple-camera flagship. The speaker grid in the notch was also checked if it would wall out. Although the surface showed visible scratches from the cutter and razorblade, it didn’t fall out. The front button also is scratchproof and was noted to survive any day. The phone also showed great resistance against burn and lasted 20 seconds under the light before showing signs of damage. It left a light spot on the screen and visible even when the screen is on. The Bending Process When it comes to bending, the P20 immediately curves than what’s expected with just the use of bare hands. This is not the kind of durability we’re expecting from today’s phones since smartphones have supposedly passed through the bending phone era. The display glass cracked immediately with a few extra plasters, but the touchscreen still works. When bent to the other side, no extra damage happened. The shattering screen glass could be problematic to the user. JerryRigEverything has tested over 100 smartphones and most of them don’t crack even with initial Level 7 scratches. Huawei falling to the floor or placed in a tight pocket could easily lead to its destruction. The similar bend test was also done with Galaxy S9, Mate 10 Pro, Pixel 2 XL, and iPhone X but they didn’t crack like Huawei P20 did. No Gorilla Glass, No Problem The alternative casing Huawei used in P20 is not as strong as the Gorilla Glass which other competitors use. Apparently, it may not be as durable as expected, it can still be considered as an everyday phone. The superb features, especially the triple rear camera with hybrid zoom, is Huawei saying, “Don’t judge the book by its cover.” It is also a smart move for Huawei to find an alternative material rather than rely on the Gorilla Glass. It may have failed for now, but further developments may someday be the Gorilla Glass’ competition.
