Google Could Have A Big Plan To Change The Way Android Phones Are Sold, And Motorola Might Be Part Of It

3 min read
Google is not content with its success of its Android platform for smart phones despite a 85% market share. It wishes to consolidate and get further in this segment and has been working on fresh branding for mobile gadgets. This brand is Android Silver and Motorola is the manufacturer entrusted with bringing out the first phones under this new branding initiative.

So What Is Google Trying To Achieve With Android Silver?

Google has been looking at ways to make the Android platform all encompassing and similar to the iOS. It will pay partners to develop phones specifically for this platform. Each of the phones would have stock Android built in and consumers would also get support 24x7 through Google Hangouts. There are plans to even supplement this by adding Android Silver booths to the outlets already selling Android so that they can educate consumers about this new introduction.

So Where Does Motorola Come In?

Motorola would be launching a smart phone called Shamu under this new branding. Initially it was thought that the Nexus 6 may be the first phones to get rolled out but now it is clear that Shamu would have the 5.9 inches screen with a resolution of 2560x1440 and would be called the Moto S. There has been no official announcement from Google or Motorola as of today about this but those tracking Google updates like Android Police as well as The Information have confirmed this development. Readers may remember that it was during October last year that Google unveiled the Nexus 5. We can perhaps expect them to do the same with Moto S and thus bring the first gadgets of Android Silver to add more options to those seeking Android phones.

Google’s Foray into the Smart Phone World with Nexus

Google recognized the opportunity in the smart phone market in 2010 and that is how Nexus One was released. It wanted to become one more player along with Samsung, Motorola and HTC among others making smart phones and selling them using the Android platform. That introduction of the Nexus One was also meant to be a reference point for other Android smart phone makers as well as developers to make sure they delivered high quality. The Nexus One was released with the latest version of Android running at that time and had no bloatware of carriers with it, making it light and providing users with a good experience. Those who bought the Nexus One believed that subsequent versions released by Google would have the latest operating system version and they would also get updates from Google directly through releases and OTA.

Google Has Squashed Rumors

There were some doubts expressed about Google doing away with Nexus releases and giving prominence only to Android Silver devices. Those rumors have been squashed by Google. They have said that new introductions do not indicate the old have to be discarded. So as of now, we have to wait and see the first release of Shamu and whether Google chooses to release Nexus at the same time or not.
